NOVA #17 RECAP |
First, you must go out buy and read this issue. It was truely fantastic!
Hats off to, Marvel Editor Bill Rosemann, writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, artists Wellington Alves and Geralod Burges for the appearance of Project Director Gruenwald. I think, when we all saw that, our jaw dropped through the floor!
The issue begins where the last one left off, with KL'RT attacking Rich. He blasts Nova and orders to be taken to command for a battlefield role. (His journey continues in She-Hulk #32 & 33). However, Nova is fine. Super-Skrull, erected an invisible force-field making it appear Nova was destroyed. Rich flys home.
There, he discovers that his brother may be in trouble at his new job- Project Pegasus. Rich goes there only to be attacked by none other than Darkhawk! There is a small skirmish between the two when Rich's brother breaks them up. Rich is introduced to Project Director Gruenwald and Dr. Necker*. Rich is told the skrulls are after the alien tech housed in the facility and that the tech may be able to turn the tide of the war.
Stated by Project Director Gruenwald, "...burn the skrulls out of the sky..."
When the skrulls invaded the Project, Director Gruenwald, locked down the vaults containing the tech -- so they couldn't steal it. Also, their computer systems used Starktech and were fried by the virus. The skrulls couldn't get at it, neither could the humans. There was one "little" device they were working on, at the time, that did not get locked up - THE QUANTUM FLASK! This was some form of "exotic radiation" discovered weeks ago in the NEGATIVE ZONE!
Project Director Gruenwald + The Quantum Flask + Negative Zone =
One problem, since their Starktech computers are down they don't have a fast enough computer to "model the necessary reaction sequences." Enter the Xandarian Worldmind!! Dr. Necker comes up with the idea to transfer the dormant Worldmind into the mainframe of the Minion Program! They succeed.
The container explodes and yellow energy is ricocheted throughout the room.
"Ri--Chard.."
"Worldmind? Is that you?
NO, ITS WENDELL VAUGHN - QUASAR!!!!
*Dr. Necker was created by Nova writer, Dan Abnett and also by Liam Sharp. Go here for more on her background.

FAN REACTION |
Holy Quantum-bands or should I be saying Holy Quantum-bandsless!
Is this Wendell Vaughn?
Why is he wearing the old costume with long hair ala Avengers Infinity, pre-Annihilation?
Skrull?
So which one? Annihilation? Making Phyla's quantum-bands a copy/fake?
Or this one? Another negative zone copycat ala Captain Marvel? And Captain Marvel skrull did just expire. Hmmm…
If not a skrull, then the Living Embodiment of Quantum Energy as portrayed in the Nova Annual #1? Could be… So what did happen in the Negative Zone to Wendell? Was that depiction in Phyla #4 real and did Wendell follow Annihilus there? What happened to Annihilus?
Something completely different?
The solicit for Nova #18 says that Nova has some "unexpected allies" - sounds like Wendell may be, indeed, the real deal. Also, keep in mind the events in Guardians of the Galaxy with a possible new team and whatever may happen in She-Hulk: Cosmic Collision could spell the return of Wendell Vaughn as Quasar. One other point that must be mentioned, is the similarity between "Cosmic Collision" and "Cosmos in Collision," -- Quasar issues 19-25 where Wendell defeated Maelstrom and graduated to become the true Protector of the Universe.
Will the quantum-bands be returned to Wendell? Does he need them? Will there be two quantum-wielders? Will Phyla give up the Quasar mantle? Skrull - say it ain't so!
Will, Quasar, Protector of the Universe, be involved in the upcoming Secret Invasion issues?!
