Welcome to the 6th edition of the Bring Back Wendell Vaughn as Quasar Newsletter! Once, again, thanks for signing up.

Remember to mail in your petitions (hint hint)!!

The problems some may have had (background colors) with last issue should be fixed.

There are some character issues with Yahoo.  There is supposed to be a 'dot' in front of the What's Inside Contents and the Links section below, not that strange looking mark.  Also, the 'mouse over' links color should just be yellow- not a box.  Other than those, everything should be good.

BRINGBACKWENDELL.COM Revised

If you haven't checked out the main website in a while, it has recently been overhauled.  Previously, there were two sites- one flash and one html.  Initally, it was set up as a flash only site.  However, many complained that they were unable to view flash content so the html pages were added.

Now, the site is mainly html but with a flash "quantum-jump" button for those with faster modems to go to the main site.  It's just a little Quasar quantum-jump animation.

It didn't really make sense to have two different versions.  Simpler is better.  After all, the main mission of the site is to collect signatures for the petition and to make that as easy as possible was the goal.

There are some really cool pics of Quasar, new headings etc.  Give a shout out with any comments, suggestions, complaints, etc.

Petiton

There is a similar petition run by the guys trying to Bring Back Ben Reilly.  They also have forums.
Credit them for the inspiration behind the new look of the Quasar petition.  Thanks guys!

Be sure to check the BBB petition out.  They have a contest for the most signatures collected and are giving out comic books as prizes.  Great idea!

Just a quick note for the Quasar petition- you do not have to include your address.  A signature is fine.  However, it looks better if there are addresses attached to the sigs, otherwise, Marvel may think one person signed them all!  Also, you may miss out on the prizes given out for those received!  Previously, t-shirts were mailed to the first batch.  Will the next batch get something?  hmmm...

For those that already sent them out - - Thank you!  Hey, if you know anbody else that is a fan be sure to have them send one!

Here are the petition links.  There is the text version for those who may have problems viewing the PDF version (Adobe).

Hey, if Q-ball can go through 5 different (original, issue 2 Eon, Cap Mar based, Avatar of Infinity, Annihilation) changes why not the websites and forums?!

MARK'S REMARKS

"Character Resurrections "

The Letter's Page Era
February, 1987

Q: How do you feel about bringing back characters who have seemingly died? Does a certain amount of time need to pass before you do it? When you kill off a character, do you leave a way out?

There are a number of different kinds of deaths in comics. There's the Arbitrary Plot Device sort of death, where a character (usually a villain) seems to die for no other reason than to make the end of the story seem more dramatic and final. If a character comes back from this type of supposed death, it doesn't really bother me. Then there's the Compelling Storyline Denouement sort of death, where a character has sown the seeds of his or her destruction in the course of the story and it would be a cop-out for him or her to escape scot-free at the end of the story. If a character comes back from this kind of supposed death, it generally negates the entire dramatic point of the previous story. I'm against those kind of resurrections. There's also The Too Stupid or Complicated to Let Live kind of death, where a character has either been ill conceived to begin with (such that any story s/he is in weakens the credibility of the Marvel Universe) of has become so hopelessly complicated and convoluted in history, powers, or motivations that you'd need an encyclopedia to figure out what his/her concept is. (The MARVEL UNIVERSE book of the Dead issues are full of these folks that deserve to die.) Resurrecting characters like this only makes their histories, powers, and motivations even more complicated. These guys deserve to stay dead, and there is a special circle in Dante's inferno for writers who bring these characters back. To sum it all up, if there's a good compelling reason for a character to die in the first place, as far as I'm concerned, there's a good compelling reason for him/her to stay dead. If there's not, then we'll probably bring him/her back after a "reasonable" time. (Does anyone think Doctor Doom is ever going to die a permanent death?) If a character has a few good traits mixed in with the overall mess, a writer can always take what works and make a new character out of it, recycling a good name, a good power, or even a good costume.
